What is hypnobirthing?
Hypnobirthing is about using techniques and mindset to experience a more calm and relaxed birth. The course teaches prospective mothers and their birth partners many techniques including breathing, visualisation, relaxation, and self-hypnosis. These techniques, combined with knowledge of the birthing process, and good support, aim to empower women and their partners, whereby they can feel very involved in the direction of the situation, rather than being out of control. This calm and relaxed approach in turn, leads to less intervention and the likelihood of a more natural and positive experience.

How does it work?
We have all experienced times when our mind has stimulated the production of physical symptoms such as sweating, dry mouth,butterflies, racing heart, tight muscles etc when we have been nervous or stressed. In this case our mind triggers our body to produce adrenaline and other stress hormones (know as the fight or flight response).
In hypnobirthing we empower women and their birthing partners to induce the opposite effect by teaching them techniques such as visualisation, breathing, relaxation and being able to go 'into the zone' to stimulate the body to produce endorphins (morphine-like hormones) and other relaxation/love hormones such as oxytocin. These hormones can help reduce the perception of pain and promote a calm, positive birthing experience.
